TEL AVIV, June 25 -- Hackers have broken into the systems of more than a dozen global telecoms companies and taken large amounts of personal and corporate data, researchers from a cyber security company said on Tuesday, identifying links to previous Chinese cyber-espionage campaigns. Investigators at U.S.-Israeli cyber security firm Cybereason said the attackers compromised companies in more than 30 countries and aimed to gather information on individuals in government, law-enforcement and politics. The hackers also used tools linked to other attacks attributed to Beijing by the United States and its Western allies, said Lior Div, chief executive of Cybereason. “For this level of sophistication it’s not a criminal group. It is a government that has capabilities that can do this kind of attack,” he told Reuters. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said he was not aware of the report, but added “we would never allow anyone to engage in such activities on Chinese soil or using Chinese infrastructure.” Cybereason declined to name the companies affected or the countries they operate in, but people familiar with Chinese hacking operations said Beijing was increasingly targeting telcos in Western Europe. Western countries have moved to call out Beijing for its actions in cyberspace, warning that Chinese hackers have compromised companies and government agencies around the world to steal valuable commercial secrets and personal data for espionage purposes. Div said this latest campaign, which his team uncovered over the last nine months, compromised the internal IT network of some of those targeted, allowing the attackers to customize the infrastructure and steal vast amounts of data. In some instances, they managed to compromise a target’s entire active directory, giving them access to every username and password in the organization. They also got hold of personal data, including billing information and call records, Cybereason said in a blog post. “They built a perfect espionage environment,” said Div, a former commander in Israel’s military intelligence unit 8200. “They could grab information as they please on the targets that they are interested in.” Cybereason said multiple tools used by the attackers had previously been used by a Chinese hacking group known as APT10. The United States indicted two alleged members of APT10 in December and joined other Western countries in denouncing the group’s attacks on global technology service providers to steal intellectual property from their clients. The company said on previous occasions it had identified attacks it suspected had come from China or Iran but it was never certain enough to name these countries. Cybereason said: “This time as opposed to in the past we are sure enough to say that the attack originated in China.” “We managed to find not just one piece of software, we managed to find more than five different tools that this specific group used,” Div said.

BERLIN, June 24 -- Two fighter jets collided over Germany before crashing into a remote part of northern Germany, local media reported. The two planes were Eurofighter jets of the German air force and their pilots were able to eject. The fighter jets were on an air combat mission when they collided and crashed, a development that was witnessed by a third Eurofighter pilot flying nearby. Local radio station Ostseewelle reported that the two Eurofighter jets collided shortly before 2 p.m. (5:30 pm India time) Monday near Lake Mueritz, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Germany's capital Berlin. "Together with a third Eurofighter they were flying an Air Combat Mission," the German air force said in a tweet. "The pilot of the third Eurofighter observed the collision and reported that two parachutes descended to the ground." A spokeswoman for the interior ministry of Germany's eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern said: "I can confirm that there was an accident involving two aircraft in northern Germany." About 300 people gathering last night outside the Hong Kong Legislative Council Complex in Admiralty, where a succession of speakers spoke about police brutality and what to do in case of an arrest. Protest organisers yesterday called on Hong Kongers to take part in a "silent march" on Wednesday to call attention to a divisive extradition Bill during the G-20 summit, which begins on Friday. The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), which was behind two massive rallies earlier this month, said the march will start in the heart of the business district and pass the consulates of each of the G-20 member nations. KÖLN, June 24 -- Responsive and quick, the roadster makes a compelling case for its hybrid parentage. Sometimes, good things happen when car makers get along. Case in point: Toyota Motor Corp.’s new Supra. Made in collaboration with BMW to resurrect a line of cult sports cars the Japanese brand churned out from 1978 to 2002, the coupe shares the same platform as the German car maker’s Z4. It’s a bold new experiment between the companies that, so far, appears to be paying off. That’s a far cry from what we’re seeing between another pair of European-Japanese car companies, which are bickering despite being partners for two decades. So, partly to take a break from the flood of news from that saga, I hopped on a Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo for a quick trip to Izu to take the new Supra for a spin through the peninsula’s breezy mountains and hot-spring-filled valleys. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Supra comes with the choice of three turbocharged power plants. The two-liter, four cylinder comes as a base 197-horsepower and a 258-hp tuned version, both of which aren't offered in North America. But the one most drivers will probably go for is the three-liter, six-cylinder, pushing out 340 hp. Inline six engines are deeply entwined in the Supra’s DNA, going all the way back to the first iteration four decades ago. Back then, it debuted as essentially an elongated Toyota Celica, with a longer hood and front panels to accommodate the engine. That aircraft carrier-deck of a nose became a key element of the Supra’s appeal over the years. Although the fifth generation is the curviest iteration yet, Toyota made sure to retain the look. Even without a badge, you know it’s a Supra. No wonder then, that Toyota engineers looked at BMW’s mostly-hood-with-a-cab-attached Z-series coupes and saw similar genes. The Supra is being offered for $49,990 to $55,250 in the U.S., depending on the model. PHNOM PENH, June 24 -- The Cambodian government has set up a committee to inspect the quality of all under-construction buildings in southwestern Cambodia’s Preah Sihanouk province after an unfinished building collapsed on June 22, leaving at least 25 people dead. The committee is led by Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction Secretary of State Lao Tip Seiha and with members from the council of ministers, interior ministry, environment ministry, national police, tourism Ministry, and Preah Sihanouk provincial authorities, according to a decision signed by Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen late on Sunday. “The committee has duties to inspect technical standard, construction licenses, construction standard, safety standard, and quality of buildings at construction sites in Preah Sihanouk province,” the decision said. It also instructed the committee to evaluate the qualifications of construction companies and to update the already-constructed buildings. The move came after a seven-story building, that was under-construction, in Sihanoukville city collapsed early on Saturday, killing at least 25 workers and injuring 24 others. All of the victims were Cambodian workers, the provincial authorities said in a statement on Monday morning, adding that the rescue operation is still going on to search for more victims. “So far, about 75 percent of the debris at the site has been removed,” the statement said. ISTANBUL, June 24 -- In a major blow to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem Imamoglu has declared victory in the rerun of Istanbul's mayoral election, after initial results showed he was set for a clear win. Imamoglu had won 54 percent of votes with almost all of the ballot boxes opened on Sunday, with the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) candidate trailing on 45 percent and conceding defeat. Imamoglu promised a "new beginning" for Turkey's largest city and commercial hub. "You have protected the reputation of democracy in Turkey," he told supporters. His opponent, former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, conceded defeat after initial results showed he was set to lose by a decisive margin. "According to the result as of now, my competitor Ekrem Imamoglu is leading the race. I congratulate him and wish him good luck," Yildirim said. CHP's projected win in the Istanbul election ends the 17-year rule by the AK Party in the metropolis. The Istanbul mayoral election was first held on March 31, when Imamoglu secured 48.8 percent of the vote, while the AK Party's Yildirim held 48.55 percent, granting Imamoglu the title of mayor with a razor-thin margin. The AK Party proceeded to file an "extraordinary objection" to the results, leading the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) to annul the results and schedule Sunday's rerun. LE CASTELLET, June 21 -- Daniel Ricciardo has been handed two five-second time penalties for overtaking off the track in the frantic final lap of the French Grand Prix, which drops the Renault driver out of the points from seventh to 11th place. With Lando Norris suffering a hydraulics issue in his McLaren in the closing laps, Ricciardo looked to charge past on the final lap at the chicane on the Mistral straight. But after running wide, Ricciardo re-joined in seventh place ahead of Norris, who also went off track, which enabled Kimi Raikkonen to pass them both in the Alfa Romeo as he had better momentum on the exit of the chicane. Ricciardo duly fought back and overtook the Finn, with all four of his tyres going over track limits, to retake seventh place where he finished the race. Ricciardo, along with Norris and Raikkonen, were all summoned to an FIA race stewards investigation over the incidents. The Renault driver has been found the guilty party in both incidents and given separate five-second penalties for each, totalling 10 seconds, which drops him from seventh place to 11th in the final French GP classification. The penalties see Raikkonen promoted to seventh place, Nico Hulkenberg up to eighth place in the second Renault, Norris up to ninth for McLaren while Pierre Gasly also profits to take the final point in 10th place for Red Bull. Ricciardo has also picked up a total of three penalty points on his race licence for the two incidents, raising his total to five over the last 12 months. WASHINGTON, June 23 -- The United States has revealed a proposal to create a $50bn global investment fund for the Palestinians and neighboring Arab states, designed to be the economic engine of the long-awaited US Middle East peace plan. The plan was posted on the White House website on Saturday, two days before a US-led workshop in Bahrain where the economic portion of the so-called "deal of the century" is set to be discussed. The Manama conference is taking place despite opposition from the Palestinians, who will not attend. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday rejected the economic plan and the US peace effort, which is led by President Donald Trump's senior adviser Jared Kushner. "The economic situation should not be discussed before the political one," Abbas said on Saturday. "As long as there is no political solution, we do not deal with any economic solution." Less controversial Speaking to Reuters news agency, Kushner, who is also Trump's son-in-law, said the economy-first approach was "necessary" to break away from the political side, as it would be "less controversial". "Let's let people study it, give feedback," he said. "Let's try to finalize if we can all agree on what that could look like in the event of a peace agreement." Fundamental political issues such as the occupation of Palestinian territories, the right of return for refugees and their descendants (of which roughly five million live in refugee camps in neighboring Arab countries) and border sovereignty were not mentioned in the plan. Instead, the economic scheme included 179 infrastructure and business projects, a billion-dollar investment to build up the Palestinians' tourism sector, and a $5bn transportation corridor to connect the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

WASHINGTON, June 23 -- The United States military launched cyber attacks against Iranian missile control systems and a spy network on Thursday after Tehran downed an American surveillance drone, US officials have said. US President Donald Trump ordered a retaliatory military attack against Iran after the drone shoot down but then called it off, saying the response would not be "proportionate" and instead pledged new sanctions on the country. But after the drone's downing, Trump secretly authorized US Cyber Command to carry out a retaliatory cyber attack on Iran, two officials told the Associated Press news agency on Saturday. A third official confirmed the broad outlines of the attack. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the operation. US media outlets Yahoo News and The Washington Post also reported the cyber attacks. |
