"But the once-great British team's deputy boss would not comment on precisely what the problem was back at the Grove factory." BARCELONA, February 21 -- A contrite Claire Williams has faced the Formula 1 media in Barcelona, admitting Williams' absence from the opening two days amid fierce speculation was "embarrassing". 'Nothing to do with money' "It wasn't just one thing. We need to focus all of our energy on this test," she told Finland's MTV, "but I'm not going to talk about it publicly. Williams' delayed FW42 finally got up and running on Wednesday, some 8 seconds off the leading pace. Many have observed that Williams' simple livery and car design, coupled with the Barcelona delay, hint at obvious money problems. "No, it has nothing to do with money. It's about not getting the car ready on time," Claire Williams insisted. "First we wanted to do a shakedown and we found that we couldn't. The parts just did not match as we expected," she said. "But I'm not going to go into any details about why this happened. We still need to analyse it and ensure that it doesn't happen again. 'Extremely disappointed' "There is no excuse. All the other teams finished their cars on time, and we did that as well for over 40 years. It is embarrassing that we are so late. "I can only apologise to all the fans and to our drivers. We are all extremely disappointed," Williams added. She said the team now has to "live with compromises" ahead of the 2019 season, just as Williams desperately needs to pull itself off the back of the grid. But she rejected rumours Williams might not be able to race in Australia with two cars. "I can guarantee that we will have not only two cars in Australia but a spare chassis and enough spare parts," she said. "It would be an understatement to say that the last days have been terrible for us, but finally we have the car on track and we can start working." One big rumour during the delay is that technical boss Paddy Lowe could be sacked. Lowe's media duties for the entire Barcelona test have been cancelled. "I did not pay much attention to all the speculation, but we are not going to waste energy with blame or washing dirty laundry in public," Williams said. As for Lowe, Claire said he will "concentrate his energy on getting our car in the best possible condition" rather than taking difficult questions from the media. BARCELONA, February 19 -- Pirelli believes a more mature track surface and warmer temperatures compared to last year are the main reasons behind the impressive speed of Formula 1's new-spec cars. Pre-season testing in Barcelona is seeing teams deliver lap times that are better than what most had projected given this year's new aero rules that are theoretically expected to impact performance levels. On Monday, Sebastian Vettel's fastest lap time was more than one second faster than last year's opening day best lap. While many have been surprised by this year's relative performance, Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola offered two specific reasons for the better-than-expected speed of the 2019 contenders. The Italian engineer points to the Circuit de Catalunya's track surface and to warmer temperatures to justify the quick lap times. "If I compare the winter test last year, the race [Spanish GP] last year and the winter test this year, there is a big evolution of the tarmac," said Isola. "The tarmac was new at the winter test last year. It was very smooth with a lot of grip coming from the bitumen on top of the tarmac. "For the race it was slightly different with the usual evolution we can see, and now there is another step compared to the race. "I believe the influence of the tarmac is higher, and the temperature [it was warmer this year] is playing a big effect. We know that." Isola was also queried in Barcelona on the 'glossy' finish applied to Pirelli's range of 2019 compounds, a change of appearance linked to production changes. "We are using new moulds that have a chrome treatment," he explained. "We tested these for the first time last year in F2. "The reason why we introduced this technology is because the hypersoft last year and the C4/C5 [softest 2019 compounds], are very sticky and, when you vulcanise and cook the tyre, it is difficult for the mould sometime. "You see small imperfections on the tread because of this adhesion between the compound and the moulds. With the new moulds, they are a lot better. "They look nicer, in terms of technology it is better but the specification is the same that we used in Abu Dhabi [test] last year." MADRID, January 26 -- Spain grieved on Saturday after a toddler who fell down a well was found dead in a tragic end to an intense 13-day rescue operation fraught with danger and setbacks. Hundreds of engineers, police and miners had been working round-the-clock under the media glare to try to reach two-year-old Julen Rosello, who plunged down a narrow, illegal well on January 13 while his parents prepared lunch nearby in Totalan, a southern town near Malaga. "Unfortunately at 1:25 am (0225 GMT) the rescue team reached the spot where they were looking for Julen and found the lifeless body of the little one," the central government's representative in the southern region of Andalusia, Alfonso Rodriguez Gomez de Celis, wrote on Twitter. "Not another time, no," shouted his father Jose when he is believed to have heard the news, an AFP photographer witnessed. Julen's parents lost another child, Oliver, aged three, in 2017. The child had cardiac problems. Julen made a "free fall" down to a depth of 71 metres (232 feet) when he hit a layer of earth, Gomez de Celis later told reporters, adding that an investigation was underway to determine any "potential liabilities" in the two-year-old's death. A hearse arrived at the mountain site shortly after the news broke to take his body to a funeral home, with psychologists at the side of Julen's parents. "All of Spain feels the infinite sadness of Julen's family. We have followed closely every step to reach him," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on Twitter, where the news was a trending topic. In a tweet, Spain's King Felipe VI extended his "deepest condolences to Julen's whole family." The Civil Guard police force, whose explosives experts had helped elite miners in digging a tunnel to reach Julen, tweeted a photo of an eye with tears pouring out. "Unfortunately, despite so much effort by so many people, it wasn't possible..." it wrote on its official account. BARCELONA, December 23 -- Barcelona held off Atletico Madrid to ensure they will be three points clear at the top of La liga going into the winter break after beating a spirited Espanyol 2-0 at the Camp Nou on Saturday. Barcelona held off Atletico Madrid to ensure they will be three points clear at the top of La liga going into the winter break after beating a spirited Espanyol 2-0 at the Camp Nou on Saturday. First-half goals from Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi were enough to move Ernesto Valverde’s side up to 37 points and keep them one step ahead of Atletico, who earlier drew level with Barca with a 1-0 win over Espanyol thanks to an Antoine Griezmann penalty. Dembele put the hosts into the lead after just nine minutes when he lashed home on the rebound after Messi’s first-time shot was pushed into his path by Celta keeper Ruben Blanco. Messi doubled his side’s advantage just before half-time, bursting through competely unmarked to meet the excellent Jordi Alba’s through ball and wrong-foot Blanco as he slotted in his 15th league goal of the season. Luis Suarez missed a great opportunity to put the result beyond any doubt on the hour mark when he flashed wide after being found by Alba with another fine pass, but despite frequently testing Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Celta couldn’t find the goal that would have put the Catalans under real pressure. Lionel Messi breaks record held by Cristiano Ronaldo after stunning goal in Barcelona win over PSV29/11/2018 EINDHOVEN. November 29 -- After scoring in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over PSV on Wednesday night, Lionel Messi wrote his name into the history books yet again.
The victory secured top spot in Group B for the Catalan giants, as they’ve collected 13 points from their five games thus far to comfortably make it through to the knockout stage of the Champions League. As seen in the video below, Messi was on the mark yet again as he dazzled with a brilliant goal for the visitors against PSV, playing an influential role in the build-up before producing a great finish to break the deadlock. In doing so, he broke yet another record, one previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo, as he bagged his 106th goal for Barcelona in the Champions League, thus giving him the title of scoring the most goals in the competition for a single club. Ronaldo previously held it with 105 for Real Madrid, but of course, he will no longer be able to surpass his great rival having secured a move to Juventus this past summer. Now, it remains to be seen if either superstar can add another trophy to their collection given both teams have made it safely through the group stage and with both men in fine form this season, it would come as no surprise if they led their respective teams on a deep run in Europe. |
