The title of "best guitarist in the world" is subjective and depends on personal taste. Yes, we know that there are many lists that seek to select the best guitarists in the world. However, every instrument enthusiast has their favourites and it is impossible to please them all. But, one thing we can do, is offer good arguments that clarify the selection criteria for the reader.
Also, the guitar is a very popular musical instrument in a myriad of musical genres, and mixing them all into one category is not a very smart thing to do. That is why we have selected the best jazz, blues and rock guitarists in history, and we will leave the musicians of other genres for another time. Shall we begin? However, some of the most renowned and influential guitarists include:
Some guitarists are not included There are many famous guitarists who have made important contributions to the electric guitar. Is this enough to be one of the best? Our goal is to be as accurate as possible in our selection. That is why we will not include:
The best rock and blues guitarists: selection criteria A few years ago Rolling Stones magazine published its list of the hundred greatest of all time, but criticism rained down for several reasons: the order, the absence of female guitarists, and the fact that there were no defined criteria to justify the presence or absence of this or that performer. On this occasion, we will do our best to go through the greatest ten of all times in the rock and blues genres. To achieve our objective, we have chosen three criteria that will allow us to pick out the musician and justify his or her presence. We seek to be objective and have therefore selected the musicians under consideration:

The history of China and Taiwan is complex and spans many centuries. Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, was originally inhabited by Austronesian peoples, but was later colonized by the Dutch and the Spanish in the 17th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Taiwan was ceded to Japan by China as a result of the First Sino-Japanese War. After World War II, Taiwan came under the control of the Republic of China, led by the Nationalist government. However, in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party, led by Mao Zedong (毛泽东), won the Chinese Civil War and established the People's Republic of China. The Nationalist government, led by Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石), and military fled to Taiwan and continued to rule there, with the support of the United States.
Chiang Kai-shek was a Chinese political and military leader who played a major role in China's history during the 20th century. He was the leader of the Nationalist government of China from the 1920s until his death in 1975. He led the Nationalists in their fight against the Chinese Communist Party during the Chinese Civil War and was the President of the Republic of China (ROC) which governs Taiwan, from 1949 until his death. When the People's Republic of China (PRC) was established in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist government were forced to flee to Taiwan. Chiang became the leader of the government in Taiwan, which was recognized as the legitimate government of China by many countries, including the United States, until the 1970s. Chiang Kai-shek led the government of Taiwan for more than two decades, during which time Taiwan underwent rapid economic development and modernization. However, his rule was also marked by authoritarianism and suppression of political dissent. Chiang's government also claimed to be the legitimate government of all of China, but this claim was not recognized by the international community, and the PRC refused to have any diplomatic relations with countries that recognize the ROC as the legitimate government of China. Chiang Kai-shek died in 1975, and his son, Chiang Ching-kuo, succeeded him as leader of Taiwan. Since then, Taiwan has evolved into a democracy and has developed a separate political and economic identity from mainland China. For several decades, the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan maintained that it was the legitimate government of all of China, and was recognized as such by the United States and many other countries. However, in the 1970s, the United States switched its official recognition to the People's Republic of China, and most other countries followed suit. Since then, Taiwan has developed into a separate political entity, with its own government, economy, and political system. However, the People's Republic of China still claims Taiwan as a part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to reunify the island with the mainland. The relations between the two sides have been complex and sometimes tense, but in recent years, economic ties have increased significantly. The future of central bank digital currency (CBDC) is highly dependent on the actions and decisions of central banks and governments around the world. As of now, some central banks are actively exploring the possibility of issuing their own digital currency. For example, the People's Bank of China has been working on a digital version of the Chinese yuan for several years, and it's expected to be launched in the near future. Other central banks, such as the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan, are also conducting research and pilot projects on CBDCs. However, the decision to issue CBDCs is not one that should be taken lightly. There are many technical, legal and regulatory challenges that need to be addressed before launching CBDCs. Furthermore, Central Banks will have to ensure that CBDCs will not lead to financial stability risks and that it will coexist with other forms of money. If CBDCs are successfully implemented, they could have a significant impact on the global economy and financial system. They could provide an alternative to private cryptocurrencies, while also making it easier for people to access and use digital payments. Additionally, they could also help to reduce the risks associated with physical cash and improve financial inclusion.
On the other hand, if not properly implemented, CBDCs could lead to unintended consequences such as financial stability risks, erosion of privacy and freedom and a decline in the use of bank deposits and other financial products. Central bank digital currency (CBDC) is a topic that has been gaining a lot of attention in recent years. As the world becomes increasingly digital, many central banks are exploring the possibility of issuing their own digital currency as a way to modernize their monetary systems and stay relevant in the age of digital payments. There are a number of potential benefits to CBDCs. For one, they could help to reduce the risks associated with physical cash, such as the potential for counterfeiting and money laundering. They could also make it easier for people to access and use digital payments, especially in areas where access to traditional banking services is limited. One of the main arguments in favor of CBDCs is that they could provide an alternative to private cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which are decentralized and not backed by a government. CBDCs, on the other hand, would be issued and regulated by central banks, providing a level of oversight and stability that is currently lacking in the world of private cryptocurrencies. However, there are also some potential downsides to CBDCs. One concern is that they could further erode privacy and financial freedom, as central banks would have access to detailed information about how individuals are using the currency. Additionally, the introduction of CBDCs could also have an impact on the traditional banking system, potentially leading to a decline in the use of bank deposits and other financial products. Overall, the idea of central bank digital currency is an interesting one that deserves further exploration. While there are certainly potential benefits, it's important for central banks and policymakers to carefully consider the potential downsides and unintended consequences before moving forward. Ultimately, any decision to issue CBDCs should be made with the goal of promoting financial inclusion, stability, and security for all citizens. US rock star David Crosby has died aged 81.The folk rock artist was a founding member of both The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. His representative said he died on Thursday, but no cause of death was revealed. However, his wife Jan Dance told Variety that Crosby passed following a long illness.
“Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music,” his wife told the entertainment publication. “Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly." Crosby was one of rock's essential musicians who helped shape the sound of 1960s rock and beyond. Tributes poured in for the musician. “I don't know what to say other than I'm heart-broken to hear about David Crosby,” tweeted Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys. Former bandmate Stephen Sills, with whom Crosby butted heads with over the years, told AFP: “I was happy to be at peace with him.” “He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius,” Stills said of Crosby. “The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun.” “I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure.” Crosby first found fame as a member of The Byrds, who hit the big time with their cover of Bob Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man. He was fired in 1967 after several run-ins with his bandmates, but went on to co-found Crosby, Stills and Nash, alongside Graham Nash and Neil Young. At the same time, Crosby had a close relationship with Joni Mitchell, with the pair acting as each other's muse. The band had their difficulties, but Nash released a statement expressing his “deep and profound sadness” over Crosby's passing. “I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years,” Nash said in a statement. “David was fearless in life and in music.” “He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world.” As well as garnering a reputation over the years for being blunt, the mustached singer was renowned for his guitar-playing skills and his vocal harmonies. He is also one of a handful of people who have been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. His career spanned six decades and he is known for some of rock's most beautiful hits, including the hauntingly pure Guinnevere and Long Time Gone penned in 1969, the night after the assassination of Robert Kennedy and reflecting the uncertain times in the US. Readers should know by now that I’m a huge fan of Blues Tone-Master Josh Smith - whose ear for tone is second to none. His Eventide Rotary / Lesslie Preset has long been a favourite of mins - as has his Signature Vemuram Myriad Hybrid Fuzz. I loved the Flat V concept right from first encounter on Instagram and immediately thought that this would become a major challenger for my favourite pedal of all time - vs the current incumbent - Chase Bliss’s Automatone Preamp MKII. That has a slightly more granular EQ, while there are more options on the Flat V - with 2 stackable Channels / Sides - and in a significantly more pedalboard-friendly enclosure.
Channel A is Transistor Based and focuses on the Clipping Diode Selection for that Channel - which covers Schottky, Germanium, Silicon and LED varieties. The only settings that apply for the A-Chanel are those 4 Diode options. Channel B is a tube-like Cascading JFETs style circuit with Waveshape Modulation Blend - via Sine, Triangle, and Square-wave LFO Modulation, or Envelope Follower. All the other Parameters apart from the Diodes apply to this channel - where you assign B1 and B2 Presets - i.e. 2 different settings which you can then morph between / oscillate / modulate between. The Secondary SENSE and SPEED Param controls impact on how the Waves / Envelope Blend is applied. To get a sort of Tremolo / Vibrato you tap the Signature Ident to flip between 2 Sides / Presets of the B Channel - both need to be sufficiently different to get an audible oscillation - and you need to further adjust / refine the Resonance and Sensitivity Params to ensure a balanced output. All that is of course optional - but gives you some really cool and unusual outputs not really found elsewhere. Touch Controls - Pre-sets / Banks [Hold], Signature Ident : Toggle B-Sides / Activate VU Mode / Activate Battery Mode / Save Pre-set [Hold], HPF / High Q, Volume / Sense. Gain / Speed, LPF / Low Q [Tap header to toggle btw Primary & Secondary Params], Diodes : Schottky / Germanium / Silicon / LED, Wave shape / Blend : Sine, Triangle, Square, Envelope Follower, A > B / B > A Channel Order, Footswitch A / Previous Pre-set [Hold], Footswitch B / Next Pre-set [Hold]. You then have 4 x 7-Segment Param Columns . Bars - each with Primary and Secondary Parameters. The primaries being High Pass Filter, Volume, Gain and Low Pass Filter, with the Secondaries as High Q Bandwidth Resonance, Sense / Sensitivity, Speed, and Low Q Bandwidth Resonance. You simply Tap the column base headers to toggle between Primary and Secondary Parameters. The EQ is significantly unique as these are synth-style 24dB/octave 4 pole resonant analogue filters versus your more typical Single, or Active or Passive 2 / 3-Band EQs. The central Signature Ident is a key element here too, as you Single-Tap on that to switch between the 2 x B Side Pre-sets (which you can modulate between) - i.e. where you’re applying the Parameters. A Double-Tap flips the screen to VU Mode - where the 7-Segment Columns become VU Input Meters - really cool! And then you Triple-Tap for the so called ’Battery’ or ’Battery Saving’ Mode - where the display only lights up when you’re touching it! The Signature Ident LED Colour indicated which Bank you are on. You have 6 Banks of 6 Pre-sets at your finger-tips - simply tap each number for Pre-set, and Tap-Hold Number for Bank. To save Pre-set you simply Press-Hold the Signature Ident, and at the same time Tap Number for Bank, and then Number of Pre-set you wish to Save to. Finally we have Dual Footswitches which activate each of the A + B Sides - where the central A/B ’button’ can be tapped to flip series order. Holding the A Footswitch Scrolls Down a Pre-set, while holding the B Footswitch Scrolls up to Next Pre-set. Those are pretty much all the essential details - I will share more when I get my hands on my unit. I pre-ordered one from Andertons (UK Poly Dealer) on Sunday Night - and it should be delivered on the day this article goes live! This Josh Smith Flat V is a really innovative and great looking pedal - with instant visual appeal. And I feel it’s incredibly good value at $399 / £399 considering the Chase Bliss Automatone Preamp MKII currently retails for $749. Poly has certainly delivered a very distinct modern looking and full-featured overdrive - I am so looking forward to getting my hand on this! Size-wise it looks pretty decent too - not much bigger than a BB-enclosure by the looks of it. There’s of course also Mini MIDI In and Out Jacks for those who need that! China’s population has decreased for the first time in more than 60 years, official data shows — a historic turn for the world’s most populous nation that is now expected to see a long period of population decline.
The country of 1.4 billion has seen birth rates plunge to record lows as its workforce ages, a drop that analysts warn could stymie economic growth and pile pressure on the country’s strained public finances. The mainland Chinese population stood at approximately 1,411,750,000 at the end of 2022, Beijing’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported on Tuesday, a decrease of 850,000 from the end of the previous year. The number of births was 9.56 million, the NBS said, while the number of deaths stood at 10.41 million. Men also continued to outnumber women in China by 722.06 million to 689.69 million. The new figures mark the first fall in China’s population since 1961, when the country battled the worst famine in its modern history, caused by Mao Zedong’s disastrous agricultural policy known as the Great Leap Forward. The decline in population could have significant economic consequences for China. The country's workforce is shrinking, and the proportion of elderly people is increasing. This could lead to a decline in economic growth and a strain on the country's social security systems. The Chinese government has implemented a number of measures to address the population decline, such as the two-child policy and measures to support families with children. Additionally, the government has also emphasized the importance of increasing the birth rate and has called for more support for families with children. China has long been the world’s most populous nation, but is expected to soon be overtaken by India, if it has not already. Estimates put India’s population at more than 1.4 billion. The head of the NBS, Kang Yi, said people should not worry about China’s population decline as the country’s overall labour supply still exceeds demand. China’s population could reduce by 109 million by the year 2050, more than triple the decline of their previous forecast in 2019.
The Fuzz Face is an analog pedal, which means it uses transistors to create its distinctive sound. Singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter and only child of Elvis Presley, died at the age of 54 on Thursday. The news came after Presley was rushed to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley’s mother, said in a statement. “She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known.” Lisa Marie Presley attended the Golden Globes on Tuesday, where Austin Butler won an award for playing her father in the 2022 biopic ‘Elvis’. She was hospitalized two days later from her home in Calabasas, California, according to her mother. Craig Little, a spokesman for the county’s fire department, told reporters that paramedics were responding to a call about a woman in full cardiac arrest. Presley was born in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Following in her father’s footsteps, she recorded three rock albums, the first of which, titled ‘To Whom It May Concern’, was released in 2003. She was married to musician Danny Keough, pop star Michael Jackson, actor Nicolas Cage, and music producer Michael Lockwood. Presley appeared in Jackson’s music video for ‘You Are Not Alone’ when they were married. Presley had four children, including actress Riley Keough. Her son Benjamin Keough committed suicide at the age of 27 in 2020. Many celebrities offered condolences to the Presley family. Actor Tom Hanks, who starred in the film ‘Elvis’, and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, called Presley’s death “shocking.” “Tom and I had spent some time with the family during the Elvis movie promotional tour. Lisa Marie was so honest and direct, vulnerable, in a state of anticipation about the movie,” Hanks and Wilson wrote. British guitarist Jeff Beck died of meningitis at the age of 78, his family said. Beck became known to the general public in 1965 as a replacement for Eric Clapton in the rock band The Yardbirds.
Jeffery Beck was born in Wallington, Surrey, England on June 24, 1944. He showed interest for music at a very young age, and he was a part of a church choir and took piano lessons for 2 years. His interest in string instruments came after his uncle showed him how to play an upright bass and the violin. His encounter with an electric guitar was when he went to a Buddy Holly concert at Croydon School in the spring of 1958. This inspired him to get his first guitar which was an acoustic, and which he borrowed from a friend – who never asked it back. He also made an attempt of building his own guitar, but never really succeeded. Jeff joined his first band “the Rumbles” in 1963, with whom he played mostly Gene Vincent and Buddy Holly songs, and he got his first gig as a session guitarist in 1964 on a single by the Fitz and Startz titled “I’m Not Running Away”. His breakthrough came in 1965 when he replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds on the recommendation of his childhood friend Jimmy Page, who also joined the band shortly after. Jeff left the Yardbirds 20 months later, and started doing his own stuff. He recorded a couple of singles, and formed his own band called “the Jeff Beck Group”, whose members among others were Shadow Jet Harris, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Nicky Hopkins and Micky Waller. From then on Jeff mostly went by himself, but he also appeared on great ton of albums by musicians such as Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Waters, Donovan, Stevie Wonder, and many other. He was even approached by Rolling Stones to join the band following the death of Brian Jones, and he the members of Pink Floyd intended to ask him to join as a replacement for Syd Barrett, but as they said, “None of us had the nerve to ask him.” Today Jeff was considered to by one of the most influential guitarists of all time. Beck has won five Grammy Awards and is fifth on the Rolling Stone list of greatest guitarists of all time. On our tour within the circle of pedal colours I like to kick off with orange. And for sure a very famous orange pedal, which has been around since 1978, the Boss DS-1 and the revamped Boss DS-1w, is orange. If the Tube Screamer is the quintessential overdrive, then the DS-1 is its distortion counterpart. Cheap, available, it’s used by players from Steve Vai to Kurt Cobain. First introduced in 1978, the Boss DS-1 was initially based around a Toshiba preamp, rather than the op-amp that would be used for later iterations of the circuit. This circuit resulted in a warm distortion tone, which was made gritty by the hard-clipping diodes placed after the amplifier stage. Although its tone is more angular, the ProCo Rat employs a similar hard-clipping action, and this is what tends to characterise a distortion versus an overdrive. The Tube Screamer, by comparison, has a soft clip, with diodes placed in the feedback loop of its op-amp. As the first distortion that Boss released, it has gone on to define the compact pedals that have come after. Probably the only pedals as recognisable as the DS-1 are the DM-2 analogue delay, BD-2 Blues Driver and DD-3 Digital Delay. Over the past few years, Boss has been introducing Waza Craft versions of some of its compact pedal series: premium versions featuring a complete redesign of the original circuits by the original developers. Some of these have been welcome revamps of pedals that have been out of production for some time, such as the CE-2, the DM-2 and the Dimension C. But this latest is not only one of the earliest Boss compacts but one that has been continuously in the Boss catalogue since 1978 and is, in fact, its bestseller. The DS-1W retains the original pedal’s triumvirate of Tone, Distortion and Level knobs but features two modes selected via a top-panel toggle switch. S is Standard mode, offering the sound of an original DS-1, while C is a new Custom mode, which delivers an alternative take on it.
Firing up the pedal in S mode you’re confronted with a sound that will be familiar to many, considering that Boss has sold over 1.5 million units and the DS-1 has been put to prominent use on stage and in recordings for the past 44 years! There are no clean sounds here – you’re into hard-edged distortion from the get-go with the Distortion knob at zero and the Level knob cranked up fairly high (from three o’clock onwards) to make sure the sound doesn’t recede as you kick the pedal in. The sound here is characterised by scooped midrange, but it can be nicely tailored with a Tone knob, which sets just the right balance of rolled-off bottom-end with strident highs.
Switching over to C mode, you’ll notice a volume jump as it’s 6dB louder with a different midrange profile. The sound is thicker with the mids poking forward, giving more presence to cut through a mix, and that extra 6dB offers much more leeway in adjusting the Level for a boost. What’s more, there’s increased sensitivity to picking and volume knob control, engendering a more dynamic playing experience suited to a range of musical scenarios. India and China have stepped up purchases of Russian Arctic oil grades following Western sanctions on Russian crude, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing traders and vessel-tracking data from Refinitiv. The EU, G7 nations and Australia introduced a price cap on Russian oil late last year, while the EU also placed an embargo on seaborne Russian crude. According to the report, Indian purchases of Russia’s Arco and Arco/Novy Port grade crude reached a record of 6.67 million barrels in November. Another 4.1 million barrels of those crude grades were supplied to the country in December, along with a 900,000-barrel shipment of Varandey crude, India’s first purchase of the grade. Prior to Western sanctions on Russian energy, Arctic grades were usually supplied to European countries. A source cited at an Indian refiner stated gross product margins from the processing of Russian Arctic crude grades are over $10 a barrel higher against similar quality US oil. Along with steep discounts sellers offer for Russian shipments, this makes Russian oil increasingly attractive to buyers, analysts say. Prior to the crisis in Ukraine, India, the second-biggest oil consumer in Asia, was a small marginal buyer of Russian crude. However, the situation changed after Western buyers started shunning the fuel due to sanctions, and in November last year, Russia became India’s largest oil supplier.
Data also showed that at least three vessels loaded with some 2.58 million barrels of Arctic crude are currently on their way to China from the Russian port of Murmansk. Like New Delhi, Beijing hasn’t joined Western sanctions against Russian oil, instead boosting Russian crude purchases by 10.2% in January-November last year, to 79.78 million tons. In November, Russia overtook Saudi Arabia as China’s largest crude provider, according to a Chinese customs report issued late last month. Meanwhile, European purchases of Russian oil have been dwindling. Russia’s seaborne crude exports to European countries fell to 167,000 barrels a day in the 28 days to December 30, from more than 1.5 million barrels a day a year earlier, Bloomberg reported this week, citing vessel tracking data. Taiwan plans to give cash payouts of nearly $200 to every citizen this year, Premier Su Tseng-chang has announced, saying the island’s economic growth will be shared by everyone. The export-reliant economy, a global tech powerhouse for products including semiconductor chips, grew 6.45 percent in 2021, the fastest rate since it expanded 10.25 percent in 2010.While economic growth is expected to slow in 2023, the government has made plans to plough an extra T$380 billion ($12.4bn) in tax revenue from last year back into the economy to help protect the island from global economic shocks, including subsidies for electricity prices and labour and health insurance.
Su said a total of T$140 billion, part of the tax revenue, would be spent as cash payouts and each citizen would get T$6,000 ($195.61). “The fruit of economic achievements will be shared by all citizens, from young to old,” Su told reporters on Wednesday, adding the potential payout requires approval from parliament, where the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has a majority. “We wish to give all citizens a New Year blessing after the beginning of the Lunar New Year,” Su told reporters, referring to the week-long holiday that starts on January 20. He did not give details of how the government would deliver the payouts. Taiwan is a major producer of semiconductors used in everything from cars and smartphones to fighter jets. Its economy continued to grow stably during the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years helped by strong chip demand for consumer electronics as more people worked from home. Taiwan’s central bank in December cut its 2022 estimate for gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 2.91 percent from its previous forecast of 3.51 percent in September. For 2023, it projected GDP would grow by 2.53 percent. The economy grew 4.01 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier.
She grew up as Detroit gospel royalty, getting her lessons in the church from Mahalia Jackson. At first, her label tried to mold her into a slick lounge singer, but she quit the crossover game, after meeting another young outsider on the label whose voice didn’t fit the pop mold: Bob Dylan. As she told writer Gerri Hirshey, “Neither of us was what you call — ah — mainstream.”
Aretha went to Muscle Shoals and became Lady Soul, creating her own raw, intense R&B sound. She forced the mainstream to cross over to her, changing the way music sounded ever since, all over the world. Her genius has taken so many forms: 1970s gospel, 1980s glam-disco, her collabos with disciples like Whitney Houston and Lauryn Hill. Or the night she stole the Grammys, singing “Nessun Dorma” without a rehearsal. But whatever she sang, she claimed it as her own. And as long as you live, you’ll never hear anything like Aretha Franklin. That’s why her voice still goes right on changing the world. Singer of singers. Queen of queens. All hail Lady Soul. |
