The first photos of Mercedes’ major upgrades to its 2023 Formula 1 car have emerged at the Monaco Grand Prix. Mercedes has new front suspension, new sidepods and floor, with initial images of the car in Monaco giving a first glimpse of how much has changed. The sidepods are a move away from Mercedes’ unique slimmed down design, towards a more conventional downwashing concept – although some elements clearly remain because of how difficult it would be to completely change key car architecture underneath in-season. Mercedes had made it clear that mechanical developments would also be coming to improve the driver’s feeling in the car, hence the revised front suspension too. This upgrade package was due to make its debut at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last week at Imola but the race was called off. That means Mercedes is running the upgrades for the first time on the atypical Monaco streets. Ahead of the weekend, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted it is a “unique” event but reckoned there was still “an opportunity to learn about the upgrades”. “We also need to be careful not to draw too many conclusions from this one event,” said Wolff. “We are introducing the first step in a new development direction. “It won’t be a silver bullet; from my experience, they do not exist in our sport. “We hope that it gives the drivers a more stable and predictable platform. Then we can build on that in the weeks and months ahead.”

MONACO, June 10 -- The Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations made a decision on Sunday not to restore the membership of All-Russia Athletic Federation (ARAF), Chairman of the IAAF task force Rune Andersen told reporters. The issue of ARAF’s reinstatement will be considered after re-checks of doping tests of the Moscow laboratory are carried out, he said. ARAF’s membership in the IAAF was suspended in November 2015 based on the investigation conducted by the WADA commission led by Richard Pound. Later on, the IAAF set up a working group led by Norway’s Rune Andersen, which, together with Russia, is implementing the roadmap to reinstate ARAF. On June 6, President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov said at a meeting of the committee’s Executive Board that Russia had taken all measures required for the reinstatement. Three-time F1 world champion Lauda died at the age of 70 earlier this week, sparking an outpouring of tributes and emotions from the paddock following the loss of one of the sport's biggest icons. A number of teams have already confirmed they will run with tributes to Lauda on their cars in Monaco, with Mercedes turning its Halo red for the weekend. F1 has now formally confirmed its own tribute plans, with a minute's silence set to be held as part of the pre-race build up. The 20 drivers standing at the front of the grid will be joined by the regular dignitaries, but also by figures "who played a special role in Lauda's career - his contemporaries and his peers", who will be holding red caps similar to the one Lauda was famous for wearing. "Formula 1, the FIA, the Automobile Club de Monaco and all ten teams want to invite all fans attending the race in the Monaco grandstands to pay their own tribute to the driver who won here in the Principality in 1975 and 1976, during the in-lap of this the 90th edition of the race," the announcement from F1 adds. "They can either wear a red cap, display a message on a banner, or simply applaud, while those watching from the yachts in the harbour can sound their klaxons, anything appropriate to honour the memory of one of the sport’s true heroes."
